These sablefish were either slinky pot or hook and line caught in Southeast AK by small boat fishermen, then hand-cut and processed by a local processing facility in Petersburg, AK.

All sablefish are caught by long-lining. How this happens depends upon the boat. The slinky pot long-line method uses collapsible tubular pots that get snapped onto a ground line, that then sits on the bottom of the seafloor with bait inside each pot. The hook and line long-line method uses anchors attached to buoys to set ground line on the sea-floor. The ground line has hooks with bait spaced throughout. The line is then hauled back on-board. Both the slinky pot and hook and line long-line methods allow each fish to be hauled onboard one-at-a-time, cleaned, bled and iced.
